Wide zone (outside zone)

Wide zone — often called outside zone — asks the whole offensive line to step in one direction and reach the defender outside them. The back aims wide, presses the edge, and reads the front: bounce it outside, bang it into the first crease, or cut all the way back against the flow.

It rewards decisive one-cut backs and athletic linemen, and it produces boom-or-bust game logs: several short runs followed by a long one when the front over-pursues.
