A fake handoff designed to pull linebackers forward and open throwing lanes behind them.
Play action fakes the run to move the second level forward, opening the intermediate window behind them. It works regardless of whether the running game is actually productive.
It also lengthens the play, which is why pressure rate matters so much against play-action offenses.
