Defensive fronts

Nickel front

Five defensive backs on the field — the most common alignment in the modern NFL.

A nickel front puts five defensive backs on the field, normally by pulling a linebacker for a slot corner. It is the base defense of the modern NFL because most offenses live in three-receiver personnel.

Nickel trades run-fitting size for coverage speed, which is why heavy personnel still moves the ball on the ground against it.
